Beavertail lighthouse in Jamestown has become quite the tourist attraction these days. According to Linda Warner, who was formerly president of the BLMA, the lighthouse has lots of visitors each year. “We’ve had up to 17,000 visitors sign our guest book in a season, and that doesn’t include the people who come in without signing” Some of these people from as far away as Russia, Japan, West Africa and New Zealand, have even signed the guest book. The lighthouse is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year; built in 1856 the current lighthouse was built to replace an even older structure from 1753. Making it the third oldest lighthouse in the US, only Boston Light on Little Brewster Island, built in 1716, and Brant Point Light on Nantucket Island, built in 1746, are older. It also takes an incredible amount of volunteers to keep the lighthouse running, 28 volunteers a week just to staff the museum.
