The Dutch Island Lighthouse is located on Dutch Island, which is also known as Quetenis, its Indian name. This Island lies in Narragansett Bay between the village of Saunderstown, which is part of North Kingstown, and the West side of Jamestown. Today the small 81 acre island is only accessible by boat, and no one lives on the island.

Dutch Island was first used as trading post in the 1630s by the West India Company, who traded Dutch goods there with the Indians. The original lighthouse was built from just the rocks on the island in 1826. Over its 30 years of services it deteriorated beyond repair, and was subsequently replaced by the current lighthouse in 1857. The lighthouse was automated in 1947 and eventually shutdown in 1969, and replaced by offshore buoys. In 2007 the lighthouse was restored and has been back in service since November 17, 2007.
