International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Talk Like a Pirate Day

Apparently today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day; it was invented by a couple of guys playing racquetball on June, 6 1995 after one of them was injured and yell out “Arrr!”. The men that started the holiday were John Baur and Mark Summers who decided to use September 19th because it was Summers’ Ex wife’s birthday. Apparently, he is one of those guys that actually remembers his wife’s birthday, which kind of makes you wonder why they got divorced.

It seems that anyone can make up a holiday; the key it seems is getting the media to talk about it since their holiday took off after Dave Barry wrote about the holiday in a national syndicated Newspaper column. Is all I can think about is all those parrot heads out their who would probably love this holiday. As I remember Jimmy Buffett seemed very keen of pirates. As you would imagine a guy living in South Florida with a yacht would be.

Here are a few pirate words to get you started:

Ahoy! – “Hello!”

Avast! – Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, “Whoa! Get a load of that!” which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “No way!” or “Get off!”

Aye! – “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”

Aye aye! – “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.”

Arrr! – This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. “Arrr!” can mean, variously, “yes,” “I agree,” “I’m happy,”…”My team is going to win it all,”…and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr

There is all kind of other pirate info on the official talk like a pirate day website:

Maybe we can brain storm some weird holiday of our own. Do you have an idea for a weird holiday, if so would you leave a comment? Nothing too weird though, and please nothing lewd or too obtuse.
