John McCain visits Rhode Island

John McCain in Rhode Island

On Valentines Day 2008 John McCain decided to show Rhode Island some love, and some showed the love right back. Namely, Nancy Chapman 82, of East Greenwich who said

“I know now why God saved you from the war. He saved you so that you can save our country.”

So far John McCain is the only presidential candidate in the current race to personally campaign in Rhode Island. John McCain arrived at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick at about 1:40 pm on Thursday February 14th and delivered a powerful and reasonably eloquent speech which echoed much of what he has been saying about defense and seemed to enhance his conservative image, but did not seem quite as heart felt as it could have. He spoke to a largely older crowd composed of numerous AARP members and war veterans. He also seemed somewhat tired or perhaps rushed, from the stress of campaigning, but was nonetheless ready to go. After he finished he went on to do a quick interview with the Providence Journal before flying out of TF Green to receive the endorsement of Mitt Romney and then went on to do an interview with Larry King. McCain began his day campaigning in Vermont before he even came to Rhode Island. So in the course of one day McCain was in Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Washington DC; 3 states and the District of Columbia all in a days work.

When McCain smiles it seems very forced; this could be partly a result of the burns he sustains to parts of his face when he was in the Vietnam War. Anyone following the campaigns will also likely notice that Hilary’s smiles often seem very forced too. I think Barack Obama really strikes people as genuine; even though he does not smile as often you can tell it is more genuine when he does. I personally do not understand why the candidates feel they must force a smile for the crowds and cameras. I really wish they would just act more natural instead of putting on the fake smiles.

Sadly this older generation, of whom John McCain is a part of, is passing away at an alarming rate. This is perhaps the greatest challenge faced by McCain’s and many other republicans. It seems so many of the current generation are more focused on seeking pleasure and the good life that they are unwilling to fight to preserve freedom. Despite our age of globalization many still see Iraq and the Middle East as irrelevant to us. They criticize Bush for supposedly fighting a war over oil, and then complain highway speed limits of 65 are too low and can hardly imagine why the national speed limit would ever need to be as low 55, which it was set to in 1974 to save energy and has since been repealed. Or they believe because they drive a Prius, which still burns oil, they are saving the planet or something. However, they seem to miss the fact that candidates such as John McCain are trying to get us off foreign oil and create incentives for green energy. They do not understand the threat posed by radical Islam or do not care to be involved, and believe we should just dump our support for the most strategically important nation in the entire Middle Eastern region; Israel. Instead they support the Palestinian terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. It would seem that the events of 9/11 have almost faded from the hearts and minds of this generation, many of whom see no relevance between the Islamic Extremists that attacked us on 9/11 and the Islamic extremists killing Americans in Iraq.

Motivating this generation without making unrealistic promises of such things as: free first rate healthcare, a nice house, car, and a dog so that absolutely everyone can enjoy a good middle class lifestyle, will prove the biggest challenge for McCain. Don’t get me wrong handouts are all good and well, so long as they are not coming from our already bankrupt government. Everyone should be looking for ways to help others and provide support for the poor and needy in society, instead of looking to a Robin Hood type as a savior. If we need to send the money through Robin Hood (Barack Obama), much will be siphon off on the way on programs that our just plain wasteful. However, if we give to the poor ourselves it will be much more meaningful, because we can see first hand how our money is helping, can show them there is someone in the world that cares, and can have direct oversight on how the money is spent.

It seems that there are all too many of this generation who believe that ending the war will somehow magically cure the financial ruins of this nation, and enable Obama to help provide the good life for all of us. There was at least one example of such a person, who likely believes it is of greater value to do things such as protest the war at this rally then to render service to our nation in the military. He probably envisions himself as following in the footsteps of the civil rights movement or something. This particular young man was holding a war protest sign and as McCain was walking out, after McCain entered his SUV this young man apparently tried to stand in the way in order to prevent McCain from leaving. This young man then proceed to argue with police over his perceived right to stand in the middle of the roadway. Perhaps if we had a law similar to Israel, requiring mandatory military service after high school we would not have such problems in this country.
