Lotus flower

Lotus Flowers

A few weeks ago my friend Bill showed me these flowers that grow just down the street from where I live in North Kingstown, RI.  Then a few days back I noticed an article in the South County section of the Providence Journal, in which they described these flowers and gave the name of them, the Lotus.  I obviously, like most people, had heard the name Lotus before, (mostly used to refer to a car) and was somewhat familiar with the flower; from it’s use it Eastern religion, although I had no idea that they were such a large and rare flower.

The Lotus flower is one of the most beautiful flowers on the planet and has been revered by many ancient societies through out history, from the Egyptians to the Chinese.  It is still a spiritual symbol in many Eastern religions of the world including Hinduism and Buddhism.  The flower is absolutely huge; it is almost a foot across when wide open and stand probably a good three to four feet high.  They grow in a shallow muddy bog like area and are just an absolutely breath taking flower.
