Yesterday Newport hosted its 54th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, despite the rainy weather. The parade has in the past run through the rain and inclement weather, and the parade’s website makes it clear that the parade runs regardless of rain; so this is nothing new. The problem is it takes quite a bit of planning to bring together businesses, fire fighters, police, military, reenactors, marching bands, volunteers, etc to just postpone it due to rain.
For this reason, the 2008 parade also got off to a rainy start, however the main difference was that in 2008 the weather broke towards the afternoon, this year the weather just continued through the afternoon. Irrespective of the weather there was a fairly sizable and energetic crowd, although the crowd tended to gather under buildings ledges and canopies set up in front of homes along the fifth ward. In keeping with the weather, a common sight this year were discarded umbrellas in trash cans and along the road that had been destroyed by the heavy wind gusts.
The parade did very well staying on time this year and finished at right around the 2 hour mark, give or take a five minutes. This was probably helped by the weather, making it a little less desirable for marchers to create gapping and linger, also the marshals were clearly making a very concerted effort to hurry the marchers on past the review stand. One rather interesting addation to this years parade was a group of Segways. Segways are one of those novelty items that were predicted to be part of general public’s everyday transportation experience and failed in that regard, but have since found a home in the niche markets of tourism and law enforcement.
