Today’s picture for New Year’s eve is a picture of the sunrise over the North Kingstown Town Beach. This town beach will be the site of a polar bear swim tomorrow. For anyone not familiar with what a polar bear swim is: it is when people attempt to show their toughness or daringness, or nuttiness on New Year’s day by quickly running in, up to the neck ideally and out of the cold water. Some even more daring people may stay it slightly longer. I am really not sure where the idea for polar clubs originally came from, I have found that it at least goes back to 1903 with the Coney Island polar bear club, and may be rooted farther back in the European tradition of saunas and cold-water bathing. The reasoning for the swim may not always make sense, but the polar bear motto sure does “When you start your millennium at 0 degrees, there is no place to go but up” (Polar Bear Club 2000, 2002). In the final analysis, even if we do not do the swim, we can all that take this motto to heart and make 2007 a great year.
