Today’s image is of the moon rise over the Great Swamp. The photo was taken a couple of weeks ago in the Great Swamp, just after sunset. The Great Swamp today is a popular hunting area, but a few hundred years ago there was a large battle fought in the Great Swamp not far from this area. There is even a monument memorializing this fight just off of Route 2 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island; although, it is in pretty bad shape.

The war began in 1675 because of a situation where a Native convert ,who had been negotiating on behalf of the colonists, was killed, thus leading to the convicted and execution of three Natives; subsequently this lead to an attack on Swansea by the Natives and all out war shortly thereafter. Although, the attack itself was not carried out by Rhode Island, but by the United Colonies (including Connecituct, Massachusetts, and Plymouth) under Governor Josiah Winslow of the Plymouth colony. Because of this, Rhode Island suffered greatly from retaliation later in king Phillip’s War, when many settlements were attacked and Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, was burned to the ground.
