Here is a picture of a Poinsettia for Poinsettia day which I just recently found out was yesterday, in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 - 1851), the first United States Ambassador to Mexico appointed by President John Quincy Adams in the 1820’s. The anniversary of his death was established by act of congress more than 150 years ago as National Poinsettia Day. There was a House resolution (#471) passed in 2002 to recognized Mr. Poinsett’s grandson (Paul Ecke,Jr.) who owned and developed the Ecke Ranch which produced valuable genetic work that has been licensed to many grows and is responsible for more than 80 percent of the poinsettia market, and is now owned by Paul Ecke III. As of last year there is even now a Poinsettia Bowl:SAN DIEGO COUNTY CREDIT UNION POINSETTIA BOWL DECEMBER 19, 2006 4:30 P.M. PREGAME 5 P.M. KICKOFF
