The location had fortifications going back as far as the colonial period. The site was called the battery at Dumpling Rock, and served together with the then newly constructed Fort Adams in Newport to protect the East Passage of Narragansett Bay.

This photograph of the Jamestown Verrazno Bridge was taken just over a week ago. The Jamestown Verrazno Bridge spans the West Passage of Narragansett Bay, and replaced the old Jamestown Verrazno Bridge in 1992. Although, the old bridge still remained standing an unused until April of 2006 when they finally demolished it. The photograph was taken from Jamestown (a town which covers all of Conanicut Island) looking across the bay towards plum beach in North Kingstown.
