Winter Storm pummels the Northeast and Rhode Island

Posted on December 14, 2007 | Category: News

Yesterday the entire Northeast was hit by a fast moving snow system, which crippled the entire region.  Although the storm was not so bad in terms of accumulation what was terrible was the rate of snow fall.  Even I was caught off guard by the speed at which the snow began to fall.  I left from North Providence at approximately 11:30 when a few flurries were beginning to come down, and within about 15 minutes time the roads were covered with snow.  Consequently what would have been a half hour drive home turned into about an hour drive, and I was one of the lucky ones.  Most people traveling anytime after that spent hours stuck in traffic and this did not improve till much later in the day.  There were many accidents form the storm.  There were numerous accidents, at least one rollover, and numerous tractor trailer trucks stuck in the snow which led to many motorists stranded.  Division Street which divides East Greenwich and Warwick was gridlocked, and Frenchtown road in North Kingstown was another hot spot for problems with a number of stranded motorists; also there were accidents on tower hill road, and on I-95 around exit 8, and even a school bus accident.  Additionally, 60 of the 152 school buses in Providence became stranded for many hours and some children did not get home till after 11 pm despite the early 1pm dismissal.

So what was primary cause for this gridlock? It was the mass exodus of early closing and dismissals combined with the fury of the storm.  We probably would have been much better off if more people waited to leave, which would have allowed plows time to clear the roads and spaced the traffic out more.  However, no one expected the storm to come on as fast as it did, and so everyone got caught on the roads during the brunt of the storm.  North Stonington Connecticut was one of the few towns that got it right they completely canceled school, no messing around there.  For the rest of us in Rhode Island we like to wait till the last minute, instead of playing it safe.  So despite the predictions many still wanted to salvage a half day or more.  However, today schools and business will pay the prices with tired and weary employees, from battling the storm yesterday.  This also raised some serious questions about the condition of the infrastructure in Rhode Island, and our ability to handle a more serious emergency such as a blizzard of 1978, if God forbid this storm continued and dropped more snow for multiple days we would had been in serious trouble.
